What is a hospital nurse?

A registered nurse is an AHPRA registered and licensed medical professional who provides care for the health and wellbeing of the community. Hospital nurses are adaptable and well-skilled as they are required to work within different hospital sectors. Generally, hospital nurses will be placed in 1-5 different sectors.

Hospital Nurse Duties and Responsibilities

Some hospital nurse duties include:
  • Getting patients ready for exams and treatments
  • Making assessments
  • Recording medical histories
  • Monitoring symptoms and vital signs
  • Administering medication, immunisations, treatments
  • Setting up care plans
  • Monitoring and using medical equipment
  • Education to patient and family members
  • Liaising or referrals to other healthcare professionals
  • Prepare documents for intake or discharge
  • Perform treatment and nursing duties under medical advice
  • Report on recovery and treatment effect
  • Dressing, bandaging, temperature measurement, blood pressure measurement

  • Fully responsible for the safety, supervision, daily life, and diet of patient

Hospital Nurse Qualifications

  • Diploma of Nursing

This qualification includes 1-2 years of formal education alongside practical experience and clinical placements within the Aged Care or hospital sector. This diploma will allow you to work as an Enrolled Nurse and will give you the option to be endorsed (entitling you to overview resident’s medication).

  • Bachelor of Nursing

This qualification includes 3-4 years of formal education alongside practical experience and clinical placement within the Aged Care or hospital sector. This qualification will allow you to work as a Registered Nurse (RN) and you will be responsible for the overview wellbeing of residents as well as the supervisions of carers and enrolled nurses.
