What does a home care nurse do?

A Home Care Nurse is an AHPRA registered or endorsed nurse (or certified carer) with specialised interest and tailored training to care for the health and wellbeing of the senior community. Generally, Aged Care Nurses work at client’s private homes.

A Home Care Nurse provides care within the home setting to allow clients to maintain their independence and to encourage independence.

Who can become a home carer？

  • Certificate III or IV in Individual Support (Community Care)

This qualification is an introduction to the health care principles and standards when it comes to caring for the aged. This certificate will allow you to work as a carer (Personal Care Assistant/Worker, Assistant in Nursing)

  • Diploma of Nursing

This qualification includes 1-2 years of formal education alongside practical experience and clinical placements within the Aged Care or hospital sector. This diploma will allow you to work as an Enrolled Nurse and will give you the option to be endorsed (entitling you to overview resident’s medication).

  • Bachelor of Nursing

This qualification includes 3-4 years of formal education alongside practical experience and clinical placement within the Aged Care or hospital sector. This qualification will allow you to work as a Registered Nurse (RN) and you will be responsible for the overview wellbeing of residents as well as the supervisions of carers and enrolled nurses.
