What is a general practice nurse?

A General Practice Nurse is an AHPRA registered or endorsed nurse (or certified carer) with specialised interest and tailored training to care for the health and wellbeing of the wider community within a General Practice (GP) setting.

GP Nurse Duties and Responsibilities

General Practice (GP) nurses work within the clinic settings and care for the broader community. They generally do not provide targeted care for one target group.

GP nurses generally assist the Doctors with the following:

  • Helping with patient assessments and physical exams
  • Taking measurements, vital signs
  • Immunisations
  • Discussing test results
  • Provision of counselling and health care education
  • Coordinate care with other health care professionals
  • Organise referrals

GP Nurse Qualifications

  • Diploma of Nursing

This qualification includes 1-2 years of formal education alongside practical experience and clinical placements within the Aged Care or hospital sector. This diploma will allow you to work as an Enrolled Nurse and will give you the option to be endorsed (entitling you to overview resident’s medication).

  • Bachelor of Nursing

This qualification includes 3-4 years of formal education alongside practical experience and clinical placement within the Aged Care or hospital sector. This qualification will allow you to work as a Registered Nurse (RN) and you will be responsible for the overview wellbeing of residents as well as the supervisions of carers and enrolled nurses.
