What is an Aged Care Nurse?

An Aged Care Nurse is an AHPRA registered or endorsed nurse (or certified carer) with specialised interest and tailored training to care for the health and wellbeing of the senior community. Generally, Aged Care Nurses work within Nursing homes, hospitals or homes.

Aged Care Nurse Duties and responsibilities

Aged Care Nurses have a wide variety of duties and responsibilities including but not limited to the following:

  • Medication Management and Administration
  • Infection Control and Prevention
  • Documentation – Care plans, assessments, medication charts, behaviour etc.
  • Education for families and residents
  • Wound Care
  • Pain Management
  • Palliative Care
  • Referrals to external departments
  • Liaising with family, medical specialists etc.
  • Carrying out the instructions by doctors

Aged Care Nurse Skills and Experience

Aged Care Nurses have 3-4 years of education with one year of practical nursing experience within a nursing home or hospital ward.

Qualifications Requirement

Qualifications to become an Aged Care Nurse:

  • Certificate III or IV in Individual Support (Aged Care)

This qualification is an introduction to the health care principles and standards when it comes to caring for the aged. This certificate will allow you to work as a carer (Personal Care Assistant/Worker, Assistant in Nursing) within the aged care sector.

  • Diploma of Nursing

This qualification includes 1-2 years of formal education alongside practical experience and clinical placements within the Aged Care or hospital sector. This diploma will allow you to work as an Enrolled Nurse and will give you the option to be endorsed (entitling you to overview resident’s medication).

  • Bachelor of Nursing

This qualification includes 3-4 years of formal education alongside practical experience and clinical placement within the Aged Care or hospital sector. This qualification will allow you to work as a Registered Nurse (RN) and you will be responsible for the overview wellbeing of residents as well as the supervisions of carers and enrolled nurses.
